Protocol for adult patients (n=500)

Protocol for pediatric patients (n=200)

Project Overview

Specific Objectives

The SPLIT project has 4 main objectives:

1) Assess the prevalence of a broad range of HPV types (and other potentially oncogenic viruses) in the non-cancerous tonsils of children and adults, and age at acquisition of infection;

2) Determine the scope for detection of precancerous lesions in the tonsil using histological and (for the first time) cytological examinations, and assess the prevalence of such lesions in high-risk populations;

3) Evaluate differences between HPV-related precancerous lesions in the oropharynx and those caused by other risk factors, notably tobacco smoking;

4) Determine the immunological footprint of HPV infection in children.

The SPLIT project will therefore elucidate the impact and cost-efficiency of new strategies for the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of HPV-associated malignancies in the upper aerodigestive tract.
